The workshop presents, as an example for Academic language, the task-based approach to teaching English for mathematicians at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. The lecturer, who is a teacher of English language and mathematics, has designed the content of the language course on the following bases: linguistic characteristics of the specific discourse and  learning and occupational needs of the target audience, the task-based approach being a natural outcome of the overall learning and teaching process. Not only will the lecturer present the theoretical background but he will also show authentic worksheets and other materials used in his courses.

Task-based approach in the course English for Mathematicians

1. Introduction: theoretical background and discussion

  • Academic language and specifics of the language of mathematical discourse
  • Needs of mathematicians
  • Functions and notions in the language of mathematics
  • Basic principles of the tasked-based approach applied at the Department of Language Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague and their possible application in other subjects

2. Workshop: from language towards tasks

  • Lexical approach and the method of contrastive analysis
  • Simulation of “real-life” mathematical problems in the language course
  • Task-based testing methods used in English for Mathematicians, UNIcert® III and other subject specific courses as represented by the participants
